Where does Bitcoin come from?

Bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto - the name is a moniker and it is still unknown who the person or persons behind the name is. The elusive Satoshi Nakamoto published his working paper - called a whitepaper - on an online peer-to-peer enthusiast forum in October 2008, and the project has grown on its own since then. Bitcoin is an open, decentralized system, meaning that no central authority has control over it, and anyone can take part in it.
